Teaching an 'old dog' new tricks

For my 35th birthday I taught myself a new 'trick' - crochet.  My friend mentioned how simple and convenient crochet was, especially for busy schedules....so I figured it was time to pick up a new hobby.

After reading a couple of books and watching countless instructional videos on YouTube, I was off.  I struggled at the start because most people teach crochet for right handed people, and I am left handed...but I got it!

My first attempt...wobbly and loose, but the basic technique is there:

Shortly after getting the basics down I started to improve and moved onto simple projects....

My first infinity scarf:

My first hat - for Ashton.  I made a little 'scarf' to match, although there isn't much to it.

I also made several Christmas ornaments - my favorite is this wreath, which I duplicated about a half dozen times.  I also made a Christmas ornament ball to hang on the tree (so proud of learning the ball technique).

Finally a more serious infinity scarf.  More serious because I worked hard to keep it 'just so', reworking it several times.  I also used more yarn and this sucker is a beauty, if I do say so myself.  Surprisingly this project only took me about 3 hours, even with several restarts - crochet really is fun and easy!

All folded up ready to be gifted.

Hat for Neela (with crochet flower). Can you believe this only took me an hour!
