Whales

Soon after booking our vacation to Maui we found out that February is a prime time for whale watching in the area; we promptly secured a tour. Today was a beautiful sunny day, with really calm waters...we headed out first thing for a 2 hour sightseeing adventure.

At first it seemed like we would only be viewing whales in the distance...but after about 45 minutes we were surprised with some close, and rather rare, encounters with the big sea creatures. We got several amazing glimpses of whales, some within under 100 meters of our boat!! We were also delighted to come across a large group of spinner dolphins who put on quite the show.

Although several of us got a bit sea sick - myself included - it was well worth it for this rare experience. At one point I dashed to the front of the boat to catch a whale surfacing within meters...blowing out a big burst of water as he swam by. It was breathtaking.

After months of anticipation, we have finally arrived in Maui! The flight here went very well; the kids were both great and the 7 hour flight went smoothly...although Ashton didn't nap a wink until just before we landed and boy was it one hard landing (he slept through the entire thing with me bracing his head as we bounced down the runway).

Within moments of making our way down the highway next to the ocean for the first time we were amazed to see all of the whales out! Out in the calm ocean we could see dozens of blows and over the past few days we have even witnessed them breaching (jumping out in big splashes). So far no pictures of this as they are too far away to get a clear shot, but we are heading out on a boat tomorrow to get a closer look!

We spent the past two days exploring, visiting our pool, hitting up the Maui Ocean Center and even spending a few hours on the beach. We love the vibe in Lahaina (the area we are staying) and our condo is great - new modern amenities that the kids have taken very well to.

Cancer Sucks

Today we found out a family friend lost her battle with cancer. She was in her forties and left behind two young girls. We remember her easy-going nature and big smile and think she is gone much much too soon.

Today all I could think about was the poem:
"God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
"Come to Me".

Another sweet soul in heaven.

Nigel got a new 'toy' for Christmas and he set it up with both of the kids help last weekend. They were very helpful and careful and *everyone* is proud of the end result. Hours of fun people!

Neela's school had a very unique Artist-in-Residence this past week...One World One Drum, a group focused on teaching math through music, using drums! On Friday the entire school gathered for a performance and parents were invited to attend. Nigel took the afternoon off to go and watch, and he thought it was great! Neela found the entire experience very thrilling.

The kids LOVE looking at Christmas lights. They actually think driving around after dark is super thrilling, so the added bonus of lights and decorations everywhere at this time of year makes for cheap and fun entertainment during the evenings. So of course we took them to the zoo, an annual tradition, to see the ZooLights.

2011 - A Year in Review

Another year, so soon!

Although 2011 went well overall, it was a bit more challenging than the previous year and I am both excited and nervous about the year ahead.

A few highlights of 2011:

We took the leap and got our basement developed. It was a major project that was even more challenging because the kids and I were home - every day - while it went on. On top of that I struggled to plow through my work with minimal peace and quiet. Although the three months were tough, the final product was well worth it. We made the decision to develop the basement so I would have a dedicated work space, and this was a much needed requirement in my life.

My work - well, this was one of my personal challenges. 2011 was tough. I was stretched and tested many times this past year. Demand on my services continues to be greater than what Career Impressions can supply. I found myself floundering, flustered and freaking-out too often this past year. Yet, because I love my work and I dedicated to its success...I keep going. I was awarded Best Executive Resume Contributor in the CPC's Award of Excellence this year, which was a much-needed boost. I also met almost every single one of my established business goals....and I have more big plans for the year ahead (although I am also going to try and scale things down a bit).

Where I managed to succeed with work goals I failed at my personal goals. A lot of personal sacrifice occurred in 2011 and I need to focus more of 2012 on reaching personal goals and looking after my health, wellness and sanity a bit more. =) I ended this year with a serious back problem...and it looks like I need to make a lifestyle change in order to be able to keep mobile and functioning (a necessity!). I also want to work out more....eat better...and spend more quality time with my kids!

We worked hard on our yard this summer. HARD! We accomplished another major yard renovation...removed, created, destroyed.....a lot!! The downside: we spent a great deal of the summer tied here to the house. To make up for this loss of 'fun-time' we are off on a family vacation in February to Hawaii!! We are all excited and a wee nervous about this big excursion.

Neela turned five and started Kindergarten - real school! This change had both Neela and I very excited and nervous. She has grown too quickly. My heart swells with pride every time I see her heading to class in the morning....but the adjustment was hard for me. I cried every morning for a week after I dropped her off. Yes, I got over it....but sometimes I still miss our special time together at home. She is doing really well though and the teacher only has extremely positive things to say about her.

Ashton turned two, and the terrible twos are real. He is an extremely articulate and bright little boy, but he also has a strong personality that must be battled with each day. One very positive thing is we get more time alone together now that Neela is in school (just him and I) and this is something I feel I owe to him after spending several years of dedicated time with just Neela. Ashton and I attend classes and he will be starting pre-preschool in January.

As 2011 started to draw to a close I did spend some time reflecting on what went well and what didn't. We have tried to make as many positive changes as possible....looking to balance our lives a bit better....getting more help (more childcare assistance and a housekeeper to start) and trying to keep focused on the things that matter most: family, health and happiness. Here's hoping 2012 is filled with plenty of all three!

We had a fun-filled and very exciting Christmas morning! The kids woke at at a decent time, got their clothes on and headed downstairs to see the pile of presents from Santa. After that it was an endless present-opening extravaganza, and once all the presents from Santa were open they were replenished with another round of Christmas presents from the family for our brunch!

They are so lucky....and we are all so blessed.

With only a few days until Christmas arrives I thought I would post a few shots taken over the past few weeks.

The kids were dying to build a snowman, but every time we went out the snow wasn't in good form to make one. We improvised instead:

Miss Neela: sugar and spice and everything nice! That's what little girls are made of.

Ashton: frogs and snails and puppy-dogs' tails. That's what little boys are made of.

Last day of school before the Christmas break! All dressed up to show her holiday spirit.

I bought some flowers at Costco today; Ashton has been so attached to them. Enjoys sitting and staring at them at the kitchen table. Cute.

Today we got to watch one of Neela's dance classes; she was amazing. The teacher told me after the class that she was a very good dancer, and this was very evident during the class. She listened well, danced with pride and nailed all of the moves!

Elf on the Shelf

So our holiday friend, Nick (aka The Elf on the Shelf) is a huge hit in our home! He visits our house every day in a new spot and the kids love running downstairs first thing in the morning to locate him. He watches them closely and they are very aware of his presence....and they haven't tried to touch him once! Which is good, because he could lose his magic if they do. The sneaky elf keeps us all on our toes...and he has had some pretty interesting watch-spots these past few days....take a look:

On Sunday he was hiding in the plant...and he made a mess getting in there too! Dirt all over the floor....tsk tsk, naughty elf.

Today he was underneath the Christmas tree...having a tea party with the kids tea set and some of their figurine toys! The kids were in awe. (Sorry the pics are not the best, I took them with my phone when the camera wasn't available).

Holiday Prep

It seemed to take a bit longer for us to get into the Christmas spirit this year; just lots on the go, but we finally decided to take the plunge....decorate the house....put up the tree....and get into the festivities!

Meet Nick; our Elf on a Shelf. I finally got this raved about book (and matching elf) and read the story to the kids yesterday. I wish I could have captured the looks on their faces when they found Nick sitting in our kitchen after the story was done! Their jaws were on the floor! They are in love with this mystical little elf who visits our house each day (in a different spot) to watch and listen, reporting back to Santa each night. I highly recommend this if you have kids.

Nigel's parents spent the last two weeks with us here in Calgary, visiting from Nova Scotia. It was great to see them and the kids really enjoyed spending more time with their grandparents.

First Annual Banff-Girls-Getaway

For the first time ever I went away with some of my friends without kids or hubbies to enjoy a relaxing and fun-filled weekend. We stayed at the beautiful Banff Springs Hotel where we upgraded to the Gold floor (highly recommended for its exclusive Gold Lounge with amazing evening 'appy-happy-hour', scrumptious buffet breakfast, views of the mountains, cozy chairs and massive fireplace). Yes, we spent a lot of time in the Gold Lounge drinking, laughing and eating to no end. =)

We also enjoyed shopping, a two hour horseback trail ride, and an entire day at the Willowstream Spa. I can honestly say I haven't had fun like this in a long long time. Many thanks to my great pals Molly and Lise and our wonderful husbands for making this weekend possible. We are already planning for next year!

Yup, I was a wee nervous at first, especially when my furry friend Troy didn't seem too keen on leaving the pen for a ride. We got along well though.

The scenery was great on the two hour trail ride which took us through the back-country and up a small hillside. We ran into a lone biker at one point who said he had just seen 4 grizzly bears ahead. He was heading in the opposite direction to us. Our guide's advice? Keep your eyes open and book-it-like-hell if we saw them. Nice. Thankfully we didn't.

Fall Favourites

As expected the Fall has been very busy! We are now nicely settled into our new routine; Neela loves school and ballet, Ashton enjoys sports class and yard work is a thing of the past!

Pumpkin Hunting

We celebrated this Thanksgiving long weekend with a pumpkin hunt at Butterfield Acres. The kids had a blast visiting the animals, riding the tractor out to the 'pumpkin patch', and finding and then decorating pumpkins.

Award Winning Resume Writer!

This week I got some seriously exciting news, workwise. The Executive Director of CPC called me to let me know I have been named the recipient of this year's Best Executive Resume in the Awards of Excellence competition. I was shocked. This is my first year being involved in the Association and I was honored to just be a nominee in two categories. To win, is well, just plain awesome and a big step in my career....an award-winning resume writer! There is only one larger competition and that is the international TORI Awards which I also hope to be a part of in the future.

First Day of School

This much anticipated day finally arrived; Neela headed off to school. She was anxious these past few days and I could sense her shock at arriving to a playground full of kids (most a lot bigger than her!), but she headed in to the class with a smile and I trust she will do just fine.

Calgary Corn Maze

We took the kids out to the Calgary Corn Maze over the weekend; it was a great place to spend a sunny morning! There is a lot to do there: tractor rides, slides and playgrounds, petting zoo, giant bouncer pillows, race tracks, and two corn mazes (one is family sized and one is huge!). We forgot our camera so these pictures were taken with our phones. Good times...

As some points the corn was almost 11 feet tall, towering over Nigel!

Big Boy

We moved Ashton out of his crib at 15 months, but we didn't think he was ready for a 'big' bed just yet so he has spent the last several months sleeping (very happily) on a mattress on the floor. We decided it was time to remove the last of the baby furniture and officially transfer him into his big boy bed. He loves his new room set-up!

Here's some pics of when we first set up Neela's 'big girl room', almost three years ago now. Notice any similarities? Yup, we got the kids the same bedroom set, just different colors. There can't be any comparison complaining now!

All Things Ashton

Ashton has changed a lot over the summer. His communication skills have improved and each day he seems to surprise us with something new. Here are a few recent videos of my "Bubba".

Here he is counting for hide and seek. Just the other day we realized he could count to 10 on his own, which was a wee shocking as we haven't consciously taught him how! Of course, when the camera comes out, he is rather distracted and keeps begging to "See? Mom!"

Neela and Ashton play hide and seek all the time together. Ashton has mastered the concept of counting and seeking or going off to hide on his own. It is super sweet. P.S - When he is older I am sure he won't appreciate these videos as he is running around without pants! haha.

Here he is counting again in his room. His new bedroom set just arrived (hence the boxes and disorder) and he is pumped about putting together his big boy bed.

Finally, some supper-time chatter. We wanted to capture how he says "Neela". He can say it correctly if asked, but most of the time he calls his beloved sister "Nenny". Cute!

Backyard Patio

Over the years we have done a *lot* of yard projects in our large yard. We purposely left the area underneath our deck for last, but this was the year it had to be tackled. Unfortunately the firepit we had hired someone to create for us several years ago in our backyard also needed to be replaced...so this summer had two big projects rolled into one. We decided the firepit could not be 'saved' and so we tore it out (a massive amount of material) and successfully recycled almost all of the material into a patio for underneath the deck!

This is what is left of the firepit...a giant hole we plan to fill and sod. Although this was an unplanned project we believe the timing of its demise could not have been better as we were able to reuse the material on site instead of paying hundreds of bucks to have it hauled off site.

Tackling this firepit hole will be our last project of the summer...wish us luck! =)

Butterfield Acres

I had promised myself that I would take the kids over to Butterfield Acres one morning this summer, and today was the day! They both had a blast. The highlight for Neela was finally getting to ride on a real horse (a pony to be exact, but she didn't think there was much difference) and Ashton couldn't believe his luck getting to touch and chase the animals with abandon!

After supper one night Ashton decided to bust out into full-blown animal noises. His favourite: the rooster and the cow. A wee crazy = yes. A good laugh = for sure. Cute = very much so!

Summer Update

Ah, summer time. A time of rest and relaxation - NOT! haha. Although we are all enjoying our summer, we are doing anything but rest and relax. We have a very large yard project we are in the midst of tackling (that will almost definitely run the remainder of the summer to complete - mainly because two small kids don't allow for loads of focused time towards it), a brand new basement we still haven't moved into (again, that lack of time), and my business (I took time 'off'' to tackle an enormous to-do list, finalize new service offerings, update the website, move into my new office space....so really I am working, but in secret...??). Ultimately, we are taking advantage of the warm weather to get outside (a lot!), but this also means long days in the heat, late nights, and as usual, early mornings. Is it Fall yet? =) Just kidding.

As for the kids....

Neela loves helping her dad outside and she is an excellent helper indeed, but she really misses the social interaction of 'school'. She still thrives at coloring and drawing and begs us on a regular basis to go places, see things and fill her schedule! Keeping Neela occupied this summer has been challenging especially because Ashton is still a bit young and isn't as interested in the things she is.

Ashton has changed enormously in the past month (now 22 months old). His speech suddenly accelerated at a rapid pace; he can sing songs (words in tune) that he has only heard a handful of times (this unfortunately includes pop songs he hears on the radio like Britney Spears) and regularly showers us with full and complete sentences. Some of his recent phrases: "I have a black coat"....."No, I do it"......"More please mom"...."Kitty come too!?"..."Where dad going?". Yup, we have chatty kids.

I will try to post some pics and video soon...but as mentioned it is summer and we are resting and relaxing......

Calaway Park

Today we took the kids to Calaway Park for the very first time. It was a definite hit! Neela proved to be fearless and funloving - she wanted to go on every single ride, including the large rollercoaster (but was too small!) - and Ashton wanted to do anything and everything that his big sister did, of course!

Finally, some progress this past week after the new countertop and cabinets arrived!

Preschool Graduate

Today was Neela's graduation from Preschool - our little girl is growing up so fast!

The teacher announced what each child wanted to be when they grew up, and Neela wants to be an Artist or a Painter. We were not suprised; a perfect selection for our sweet gal.

I think we scored an amazing preschool teacher, which can really make all the difference. Mrs. Waldolf has regularly suprised me with her outgoing attitude, extreme dedication and pure devotion to her 'children'. She always has pleasant things to say and has gone out of her way throughout the year to make the experience so special for all involved.

Mrs. Waldolf was weepy today as she thanked us for letting her be a part of the kids growth and development, and I was very touched.

Neela has developed and matured considerably over the past year; preschool has provided her with such a great head start in life.

Neela - a world of opportunity awaits you....we know that you will do great things in your life time and we are SO VERY PROUD of you!

Saturday we spent a part of the day out in Kananaskis visiting with my dad and friends (who had several campsites out there). The kids had a blast...bike riding, playing soccer with the beachball and going for a long walk to the lake.

Neela is one smart, sassy and sharp little girl! Here she is doing one of her favourite things: playing computer games.

Dancing, singing, dressing-up, playing make-believe are all things she enjoys doing. Here she is putting on a show for me!

She also likes to practice being a ballerina so we are hoping to get her into dance classes this Fall.

Basement Update - First Snag

With only two weeks left until project completion - we reached a snag in the development. There are only two major items left to complete: the bar area (cabinets, fireplace and stonewall) and carpet. After waiting several weeks for our custom cabinets to arrive...they did, but with the wrong counter-top. Long story short...new counter-top has to be made which holds up completion of all remaining items. Sigh.

Bar area is all ready to go....unfortunately the counter top in this pic is the wrong color. We have to have it removed before the rest of the cabinets can go in....along with the island top. The stone work can't start until the counter tops are in, so now we wait.

Eyes on the Prize

I had to record this for memory sake.

Nigel got Lazik eye surgery last Thursday. This is a photo of him shortly after he returned home from the procedure. He has his eyes closed behind those dark shades (and no idea I snapped this pic!)...as his poor eyes were a wee traumatized and he could not keep them open. Although the procedure went well and he can see perfectly fine now...I had the extreme heebie-jeebies for a few days. There is NO way I could ever have this done to myself, especially after listening to how things went and seeing his discomfort. I would have had a very difficult time coping, whereas Nigel handled it all very well. Since he has been waiting a long time for this day he is thrilled to be completely glasses-free!

We don't use the automated car wash too often....the kids are not big fans. I decided to try it again yesterday, and as soon as it fired up both kids had their hands over their ears! Neela did start to smile and enjoy it, but this was after a bunch of initial fretting.

Progress continues on our basement development. The drywall is complete... and the mudding and taping is done.

This bar wall won't be drywalled; plywood will be used instead. A stronger surface is required for the stone. The fireplace nook has special heat resistant drywall inside of it.

After the spring snow melted, we were finally able to break out the bicycles for the year. We tuned up Neela's bike from last year and got Ashton a new push trike and helmet. The kids LOVE to go biking.

After a careful search for the right contractor, we have finally decided to finish developing our basement. Work commenced this week and things have progressed really well in just a few short days. It is very challenging being home with construction on the go....it is loud, people are coming and going and my day is constantly being interrupted to deal with questions or to make decisions. Yet, we know it is temporary and we are looking forward to the final result. I am planning on using the basement to have a dedicated work space of my own (horray) so I know I have to go thru the 'pain' to get the 'gain'.

Today was another first for Ashton - his first haircut. I decided it was time to try and tame his wispy locks and ducktail fluff, as cute as it was!!! Sigh. Overall, he did great. He wasn't entirely happy with the process, but he didn't fight it as hard as I thought he might.

18 Months

Our little boy is growing up: Ashton is officially 18 months old today!

At his vaccination appointment last week he weighed in at almost 25lbs exact (50th percentile and a bit less than I would have guessed) and 88 inches long (98th percentile). Overall, he is doing really well.

This month some of the new words I can recall for Ashton include: "hand, wipe, love you, snack, cookie, man, oh-oh, dog, on/off.... ". He can basically repeat any basic word, and his vocabularly is becoming clearer and more defined every day. A funny thing: he has a unique name for his comfort items, which is exactly like his big sister! Neela called her beloved blankey a "na-na" and Ashton calls his special kitties "Ne-ans". No suprise, another of Ashton's fav things IS Neela...which is also calls "Ne-an". Interesting. No matter how often we ask Ashton to say "Kitty" or "NeeLA" , he only says "Ne-an". Hm.

He plays exceptionally well by himself; making up car games, pretending to cook and feed his beloved cats, playing music on his instruments so he can dance. He can hum a tune right after hearing it (just yesterday he saw a Spiderman commercial and started to hum the spiderman song....unprovoked by me!), he loves to dance, is learning how to jump, and has mastered feeding himself using a spoon as seen below.

Ashton is finally getting the last of his teeth (just four more to go), still naps during the day, loves to eat and adores his big sister!

I personally think this age has been one of the best stages with him yet. He is more settled, can communicate a lot better and is certainly a load of fun! WE adore HIM!

Neela's preschool class went on another field trip yesterday - bowling! I volunteered to help (although it has been forever since I've bowled myself) and we all had a blast.

Neela colors at least a dozen pictures each day - no exaggeration! She spends hours each day carefully crafting her own designs or coloring pages and pages in numerous coloring books. Her new trend is to draw everyone she knows, and to address it to the person she is drawing.

She has mastered spelling each of our names and is getting very creative with drawing each of us. I wanted to capture this moment so she can look back at it one day.....so sweet!

Monty

Neela's class has a special stuffed monkey named Monty that each child gets to bring home for a sleepover. They are supposed to do some fun things together and document their experiences to share with the class. Last Wednesday Neela burst out of her class, eyes bright, with Monty in hand! She couldn't wait to get him home and took her role with him very seriously. Here are some of the things they did together:

Busy Times

Things are still going at a break-neck speed these days, so I haven't found much time to take pictures of the kids! Nigel is off on a business trip to Asia and I am trying to balance home, kids, work and life. Eep! I keep hoping that 'next week' things slow down...but they never do.

Sickness....be gone!

~~~~Warning: Some of the following content may be disturbing to some readers. Yucky, gross and awful sickness descriptions ahead.~~~

It has been several LONG and tough weeks of illness here at the Tom house. We never seem to come down with just a typical common cold, instead we contract all sorts of disgusting illnesses all at once and suffer through them together.

Nigel kicked us off with what seemed to be an endless cold/cough (still going after three weeks!), and then each of the kids got 'colds'. Neela has a cold/cough but overall seemed to fair the best. She was off school for a week and still suffers from a cough, but nothing too major...yet. I got laryngitis. No voice for me, or only a hoarse croak for several days. My windpipe is so swollen it is painful eating almost anything and my headcold has been going strong for 10 days now.

Ashton has faired the worst...he was seen by a doctor last week and they believe he has an ear, eye, throat infection (bad cold/cough)...add pus leaking eyes, diarrhea and some vomiting! Above is a pic of the poor thing one day last week when he woke up looking like death with purple swollen eyes. He had a chest x-ray last Friday, and thankfully his lungs are clear.

Now, we wait....and wait and wait for things to improve.

V-Day

Neela was finally well enough to attend school yesterday (after a week off) and it was just in time to celebrate another of her favourite days! She was thrilled to go and share all of her handmade valentine's cards/crafts with her friends...coming home with a bag bursting full of reciprocated treats, exclaiming: "This was the BEST Valentine's day EVER!"

New Rockin' Chairs

Back in early December we decided it was time to get some new furniture for the house. We got a new couch and loveseat for our bonus room (kids playroom) that was relatively simple and inexpensive (it was for the kids room afterall)...but we also splurged on a pair of custom made chairs for our livingroom (the grown up space), which finally arrived yesterday! The chairs rock!...literally.

Oh, and a fun new 'martian' lamp as a final touch....

A complete space....we just have to work on convincing the kids that the new chairs are not giant toys! hmmm....

Bye-Bye Baby....Hello Big Boy

Last weekend we dismantled the crib for the final time. I wasn't the least bit sad to see it go!

Although Ashton is only 16 months old, we didn't want to wait until he was stronger, smarter and even more ambitious before introducing him to a bed. However, we didn't think he was ready for the raised up bed yet, so we simply put a mattress on the floor for now. He loves it and has gone to bed without any stink or fuss for the past week. Hopefully in a few months he has mastered the height issue and can be safely placed into the actual bed frame.

Yup, bed and floor...kinda the same thing to Ashton right now. Actually he typically doesn't leave his 'bed' at all during naps or during the night. I hope it lasts!

Today Neela's preschool held an ice skating party for the students and their families. Neela hasn't had much practice with her skates, but she was very anxious to go! She has definitely improved though; by the end of the party she was getting more proficient at shuffling herself around the ice.

Ashton is a bit too little for skates, but the rink allowed sleds and strollers on the ice...so he still got to join in on the fun.

16 Months Old

Yesterday Ashton was officially 16 months old. He is changing a lot these days; still a high energy and spirited little boy, but some new things include:

He has a new found passion for books! We could read all day and he would be completely content.
Some of his new words include: 'night-night", "cracker" and "bug". He makes a great effort to mimic things we say and some words come out clearer than others, but all is understood.
He has started his very first 'baby class'. I finally found a program that fits into our schedule where I can spend a bit of time exclusively with Asthon. The class is 30 mins of reading and singing and 30 mins of gym time. He is a bit shy in the group setting and regularly signs to me that he is 'all done!', but during the gym time he is all smiles and a ball full of energy! I am hoping he becomes most accustomed to playing with kids his own age.
For the last week he has shown more interest in eating fruits and veggies than meat or bread. Some nights *all* he eats for supper is carrots...or broccoli. Handfuls and nothing else. I find this rather rare....and I am sure it won't stick around!

2010 - Year in Review

Happy New Year everyone! We are all excited to welcome 2011, and I must say a bit sad to see 2010 go. It was a good year. Challenging in many ways yes, but an overall great year.

Some of the highlights of 2010, for me personally, include:

* Getting active first thing in January 2010. I started taking an exercise class and performed Ab Ripper X several nights a week. In just two months I had lost the last of my baby weight and I felt great!!! I also joined a bookclub, carried on with my Stampin club and started working again (all with a three year old and a three month old)! Getting moving really got me motivated...in many ways.

* Our first vacation as a family of four. Although we only went to Kelowna, we were initially a bit anxious about how the kids would react to the eight hour drive (each way) and the experience of sharing a space with several other families. Yet, we were pleasantly surprised by how well behaved our kids were, how well they slept, and how much they enjoyed the entire trip. I'll admit it was still tough at times...packing up a car for all of us (2 kids need a lot of stuff!!), driving all that way, not sleeping a lot ourselves and managing an active nine month old and three year old wasn't exactly restful- but we are already looking forward to this year's trip....wherever that may be.

* Ashton's first birthday. A big milestone for both him and us. Although we cherished the baby stage, we were also glad to see it end. As our kids grow older we are enjoying them more and more and we are glad to be leaving the newborn/baby stage behind us. So many more awesome adventures ahead.

* Neela starting Preschool. My goodness this milestone arrived too fast, but Neela was ready!!! She loves to learn and loves making new friends. Attending school has been great for her...and I love seeing how excited and energized she is after each class. She has made huge strides in her vocabulary, math, reading, counting and artistic abilities in just a few short months. We know she will continue to enjoy school in the year ahead.

* My business growth and change. My goodness this is a big one for me. Looking back at this time last year I NEVER could have predicted where I'd be in a year's time. I NEVER imagined making such strides in a personal venture, so quickly. But opportunity came knocking and I didn't hesitate. I will admit, I had to give a LOT of myself over the past year to get to where I am today (marketing, advertising, hiring, training, mentoring, managing, bookkeeping, legalities, writing, administration....I do it all!!!!), but it has been worth it. And I recently completed another designation to become Western Canada's third Certified Employment Interview Professional. It took me months to fit in the time to study and take the test, but again....it was worth it when I got those results. Thanks to my business I have been able to jump for joy (literally!) several times this year.

* Christmas 2010. It was pure joy watching the kids enjoy the holidays this year. Again, the older they get the more enjoyable everything becomes.

I could freeze time right now....because the kids are so cute, things are going well, and we are all so happy. I hope I can say the same thing in a year from now. Oh heck, I want to be able to say more!!! My goals for next year are established but I am hoping for a few amazing surprises along the way. =)

Whew - another Christmas is coming to a close. It was a busy few days, with last minute preparations and lots of excitement. The kids had a blast though, and I must say they truly make Christmas magical.

Christmas Concert

Today was a big day for Neela: her very first Christmas concert; getting up in front of others to perform. She seemed rather nervous on the way to school, but she was a super star once things got rolling. She knew all the words to the songs and did each move with gusto and grace. We were so extremely proud of her!

Growing Up

My little boy will be 15 months old this week! He is growing up so fast and getting smarter and cuter every day. Some of the new things he can say include: "cheese, ball, boo-boo, up waw-waw (for water), juice". He is just starting to string words together and in the past week said: "bye-bye dada" and "poo-poo mama"! (I know, he won't appreciate this note when he is older...but I will). I find everything he says so sweet and amazing.

Gingerbread House

Last week I finally got a free moment for Neela and I to work on the gingerbread house. I assembled the structure and applied the frosting and she got to work decorating it in tasty candy! She was extremely proud of the end result....

...and was anxious to sample it! =)

Instead she ate a decorated gingerbread cookie with a dozen candies on the side! I don't know what was sweeter, the house or her sweet face!

This week they played together in the tub; Neela painted herself with bubbles and then painted Ashton too!

They also turned the pantry into their own secret hide-a-way...

This year we decided to put up our small fake tree, a bit easier and a lot less messy; plus if Ashton pulls it down it won't be as hard to get back up. =)

Neela

Neela is growing up fast. She is so mature now. She tries hard to apply new vocabulary whenever possible, such as "I am exhausted", "It was my pleasure", or "I am extremely helpful". She is loving preschool! She is very obviously a crafty kid at heart, as she spends a good portion of each class focused on the craftier items (coloring, writing, painting, or cutting). Her coloring is starting to become very distinguished and artful; she colors in the lines and chooses just the 'right' shades. She is also mastering basic math and is making amazing progress at sounding out words! Just last night she read the soap in the tub: "Dove" all by herself after sounding it out.

Neela has also started to become more of a girly-girl, immersing herself in all things princess. She is starting to appreciate pretty things and enjoys looking good! Although Neela struggles a bit with sharing with Ashton, she loves him dearly and helps me by looking out for him- regularly calling that he needs a diaper change or a nose wipe when I am out of the room. =)

Ashton

Our lil stinker turned 14 months old this month. He finally dropped his morning nap, but still sleeps for about 2 hours every afternoon (whew!). He has become much more communicative this past month; waving and saying 'bye-bye' at the appropriate times, asking to be picked 'up', offering hugs and kisses when asked, calling 'mama, dada or eee-aaa (Neela)'. He loves a few very special stuffies 'pup pup and ittteee' (puppy and kitty) - which he carries around and snuggles each time he heads to bed. Over the past two weeks he has been teething on and off - getting all those molars in, but is still eating like a champ: outeating his sister on a regular basis now! Ashton loves to role play (he makes 'food' in the kitchen, feeds his stuffed animals and drives his cars all around the house). He also has a great musical ear, humming a tune he hears on tv almost perfectly. Just yesterday he sang: "hop up jump in" in response to the tv show Handy Manny!
